The goal of the Loup Basin RC&D Tourism Committee, a
sub-committee of the Loup Basin RC&D Council, is to entice tourists to visit the
unexplored unique attraction in our 9-County area in Central Nebraska. In the
past year, the committee has completed two brochures and made progress on two Nebraska Byway programs.
The Tourism Committee meets monthly to plan and accomplish their projects. Members from each of the nine counties participate to accomplish the following projects.
Brochures - The Loup Basin RC&D Tourism Committee completed two brochures this year. Both brochures covered the nine county area. One brochure was titled "Nebraska's Heartland Adventure" and included outdoor attractions such as trail riding, fishing, rodeo, hunting, and bike and hike trails. The second brochure titled "Nebraska's Heartland Heritage" included cultural attractions such as museums, festivals, and fairs. Both brochures included a photo of a unique attraction to the area and an area map with all of the attractions on it.
Nebraska Scenic Byways - Two highways were awarded the scenic byway designation in the Loup Basin RC&D area. Highway 2 has been named The Sandhills Journey and Highways 11/91 has been named the Loup Rivers Scenic Byway. Highway 2 has their byway management plan completed and has designed a rack card of their own, limited to attractions along Highway 2. Highway 11/91 are working on their byway management plan but have stocked the attractions along Highways 11/91 with the area brochures. Members of the Tourism Committee attended a Statewide Byway Workshop in May 2000. The workshop informed them about deadlines, available monies, and other byway accomplishments. The two byways are included in the National Byway website.
