Resource Conservation and Development

The Nebraska Resource Conservation and Development Association is pleased to share the 2005 council activities report with you. Having all twelve RC&D councils funded and operational has proven to be a tremendous asset. RC&Ds serve the state with grass roots leadership to make locally driven projects a success. The small investment in each RC&D council, including the willing participation of its volunteers, has resulted in an excellent return on invested tax dollars. I encourage you to review each of the 12 RC&D council’s success stories, and I’m sure you will agree the RC&D program is one of the most effective programs available. In 2005, the Northeast Nebraska RC&D received the Outstanding Achievement Award. Northeast Nebraska RC&D Coordinator Jan Jorgensen identified several areas that contributed to their success:

  • The RC&D council implemented four high priority areas.

  • Has an effective outreach program, which includes local Native American tribes

  • A diverse RC&D council with different ideas being brought to the table

  • Received $151,000 in grants to fund a variety of projects

  • Fine tuned the Artist of the Month Program to recognize local talent

“The Native American Center” was awarded the Outstanding Sponsor Award and has an outstanding working relationship with the Panhandle RC&D. The Native American Center was active in bringing together the Intertribal Gathering at Fort Robinson State Park. This year the gathering attracted over 3,000 visitors and 69 tribal dancers. The event required a lot of volunteers and financial resources to make it a success. The Native American Center accomplished two specific objectives - outreach and diversity. The Nebraska RC&D Executive Committee really appreciated the support from the Natural Resources Conservation Service State Conservationist Steve Chick and Assistant Conservationist Ken Noonan. Cooperation from the Congressional delegation, Nebraska Rural Development, the Governor’s office, State Legislature, Health and Human Services and other agencies also deserved recognition.

Sincerely Yours,
Ted Tietjen, Chairman

Nebraska RC&D Background

What is the RC&D Program?
The USDA Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Program, administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), has become a key component in helping develop rural Nebraska. There are 12 RC&D areas covering all 93 Nebraska counties.

The first RC&D authorized in the state was the Panhandle RC&D in 1970. In July 2003 the Sandhills RC&D became the final RC&D to be authorized in Nebraska.
