Welcome to the Heartland of Nebraska! Traveling 150 miles from Wood River to Dunning along Nebraska Highways 11 and 91, the Loup Rivers Scenic Byway follows the river valleys of the Loup Basin to the beauty of the Sandhills.
The late Charles Kuralt called Nebraska's Highway 2 "one of the most beautiful highways".

 

 
Loup Basin RC&D Standing Committees

Loup Basin RC&D Committees include:

  1. The Loup Basin RC&D Tourism Committee
    The committee revised their popular birding brochure and distributed them and their four other brochures at two Travel and Tourism Shows plus local festivals and events. The committee added a tourism section to the Loup Basin RC&D web site. They also developed a draft of an interactive tourism CD which promotes area businesses and attractions. The committee is working to finalize the CD for distribution in Spring/ Summer 2005.
     

  2. Loup Rivers Scenic Byway Committee
    The Loup Rivers Scenic Byway Committee has separated from the Tourism Committee to focus on the Highway 11/91 corridor. The committee has been working on a membership drive and fund raising projects.  They have been selling bird "identiflyers" (birdcalls and alarm clocks) and have organized a 220 mile Junk Jaunt along Nebraska Scenic Byways: Loup Rivers (Hwy 11/91) and Sandhills Journey (Hwy ).
     

  3. The Loup Basin RC&D Economic Development Committee
    Meets monthly to address economic development issues in the area. The committee is currently working with area schools and teachers to develop business-planning curriculum for area high schools. The committee also developed a grant writing workshop and directory. The Loup Basin RC&D web site currently has an area business directory on it. The committee is working to develop a searchable directory with more detail and accuracy.
     

  4. The Loup Basin Water Association
    Brings together area irrigation districts and NRCS and NRD personnel to discuss and share similar concerns and resources. The Water Association meets at the Lower Loup NRD and the NRD coordinates and facilitates the meetings and tours held by the committee. A tour of the western part of the area was held for all employees, managers and directors.
     

  5. The Cedar River Stabilization Project Committee
    Secured funding to assist 13 landowners along the Cedar River this past year. The committee and participating landowners submitted and secured US Army COiFs of Engineer Permits. Grant applications for continued cost share assistance have been submitted. Committee/Landowner meetings are used to discuss proposed practices and answer questions. Youth activities such as site monitoring teams, willow plantings and river cleanups have been developed. A stream workshop and tour of completed sites have been used to educate landowners.
     

  6. Loup Basin RC&D Agri-diversity Networking Group
    Brings together ag-diversity producers to share ideas, concerns, and cooperate on projects. The group holds periodic tours of area producers currently in ag-diversity.
